Overview
Jonathan Goldman, Tuesdays, 4:30pm—6pm
9 weekly sessions beginning April 22
Have you always wanted to read Joyce's Ulysses but not gotten around to it—not had the time, not felt ready to tackle a famously difficult novel? Have you been thinking about this lately, what with the hubbub over the novel's 100-year anniversary in 2022?
The time is now! Join Jonathan Goldman, president of the James Joyce Society and internationally recognized Joyce scholar, in what will be part reading group, part class. All are welcome, whether you have read the novel before or are completely new to it or its author altogether.
The goal of the course will be to walk participants through some of the novel's difficult passages and themes to facilitate not only understanding, but an appreciation of its humor and humanity. The emphasis will always be on the pleasures of consuming Joyce’s masterpiece.
Taking on between one and four chapters each week, we will end in time for Bloomsday, June 16, at which point we will celebrate what is a real achievement: finishing and, hopefully, loving Ulysses.
